LOCUST PROJECTS
The heroic adventures of Torpedo Boy and his battles in the Moundverse continue at Locust Projects with a new site-specific installation by Houston-based artist
Trenton Doyle Hancock - his first
project since opening his major survey at MASSMOCA earlier this spring. Hancock's Moundverse is an epic and fantastical creation myth he started at age 10 with the creation of Torpedo Boy,
a well-intentioned, deeply flawed alter-ego superhero who attempts to save the gentle Mounds from the evil Vegans. His narratives
- told through paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, video
and installation - explore good and evil, authority, race, class, moral relativism, politics and religion, as well as making unapologetic nods to comic books, illustrations, animations, horror films,
and toys. LOCUST PROJECTS, 3852 N Miami Avenue, Tuesday - Saturday from 11am - 5pm

MICKALENE THOMAS: BETTER NIGHTS
The Bass Museum of Art, 2100 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach.
Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights is curated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá. Inspired by the local New Jersey play 'Put a Little Sugar in my Bowl' organized and performed by the artists' mother,
friends, and family as well as the parties hosted by the artist's mother in the late 1970s, Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights is an installation that will transform the galleries into an immersive art
experience for the duration of the exhibition. Better Nights will present a schedule of programming arranged by the artist, including live performances, concerts, activations, a live bar and appearances
by guest DJs. The first chapter, Better Days, took place at the Galerie Volkhaus in Basel, Switzerland during Art Basel 2013.
The installation embodies an apartment environment, conceptually reconstructed according to the domestic aesthetic of the period, including faux wood paneling, wallpaper and custom seating reupholstered
with the artist's signature textiles. An extension of Thomas' artistic universe, the installation incorporates both work by the artist and a curated selection by Thomas featuring work by emerging and
prominent artists of color, with the prop-like tableau echoing the collage-like compositional style of Thomas' paintings.

Wynwood Walls
2520 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127.
Conceived by the renowned community revitalizor and placemaker Tony Goldman in 2009. He was looking for
something big to transform the warehouse district of Wynwood, and he arrived at a simple idea: "Wynwood's large stock of
warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in
one place." Starting with the 25th-26th Street complex of six separate buildings, his goal was to create a center where
people could gravitate to and explore, and to develop the area's pedestrian potential.
